Linux on ESPN This Weekend! April 19-20 2008

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Justin Breithaupt | *NIXEDBLOG

You read right! Watch ESPN on the 19th and 20th. Ultumix GNU/Linux will be on ESPN this weekend in Garfield County. As you see here on the Map there are 6 courses. 4 of these races have spectator areas. I will be putting up 2 billboards at each of these spectator areas with the Tux Penguin and ULTUMIX.COM written on top. Click Here To See The Bill Board Design. The Race is known as the Olympus Rally. since they will be driving past 2 spectator spots every day I will be making 4 signs and posting 2 at each of the two tracks each day. I don’t know if I will sell many computers or get any donations but I’m sure that these signs will be worth the $10.00 laminate board I’m putting them on. 🙂 If your in the local area and this race was anything like last year’s race I hope to see you there.

If you would like to help by donating to this cause please go to and donate ASAP. Thanks.

The power of seeders! Share and Share alike.

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

The above picture was taken today after looking at my Ktorrent Server.

Yesterday people could not stop complaining about how long it was taking to get Ultumix GNU/Linux and over 23 people were leeching off of it. What is amassing is that this 4 GB download went from 23 lechers and 1 – 2 seeders to 8 seeders and 1 lecher in such a short time.

This is why it’s important to leave your torrent client open for at least 24 hours after you finish downloading so that you upload to others and get more credit. Also when you share more and get more points for sharing you end up getting faster download rates.

Thank you to those of you who made this possible. Also if you want to download Ultumix GNU/Linux Gamer Edition the time is now while there are still 8 seeders. This probably won’t last long.

FOSS Advocate Needs A Little Boost!

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Thomas Holbrook II | *NIXEDBLOG

This article is cross posted, so take note.

I wish I did not have to do this.  I was requested not to make a public spectacle of it, but as it turns out, somebody else has done it for meIn the WE ARE *NIXED blog, I talked about how a certain vehicle’s transmission went upchuck.  They still need to get the blasted thing replaced, but are in need of funds in order to do so.  That is why I am going to make a spectacle of this.

Go ahead.

Laugh at me if you will.  However, I have never seen a person with the passion that they have for helping out kids who need a computer to do their assignments now that many schools down in Texas are requiring one or the alternative….alternate assignments, which can be a humiliating thing.  I have also never seen a FOSS advocate with so much energy.  Yes, I am making a spectacle of this, because there are times when a steering wheel needs to be yanked in times of an emergency.  This is one of them.

Any situation can be assessed as pretty dire when it involves a vehicle that just will not budge anymore.  However, when the wife of the advocate starts pleading for assistance, then that should be an indication of how dire said situation actually is.  I myself have no choice but to follow the orders of helios.  I was asked not to give a single drop in that bucket at this point.  I have no choice, because I am completely broke until Thursday.  However, what I can do will be more powerful than any amount of cash I can drop down in the near future.  By clicking here, you will be taken to the appropriate page for donation purposes.  So please, if you can, help this person out a little bit.

Thomas Holbrook II | *NIXEDBLOG

WE ARE *NIXED!  That is the new blog that I have created, which was inspired by the group known as We Are Change.  Imagine a group similar, but with the focus being on Microsoft and computer technology.  That would be the aim of the WE ARE *NIXED blog.  I am also going to be doing some dramatic changes to the website very soon.  I am truly looking forward to doing so.  Please click here for more details.

Microsoft has set a trap. DON’T BITE!

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Justin Breithaupt | *NIXEDBLOG

According to Microsoft and other sources it’s now safe to use Microsoft software in Linux without being sued and Microsoft is going to release their source code! WHAT!

Microsoft can say whatever they want to say but that does not mean I will believe it. I want to see it in writing first! If Microsoft will colaborate with people like me I will put their software into my Linux distribution and freely distribute their software. Wait that would put them out of Business right? Well yes it would unless they still keep the rights to their .net framework and other core systems that are needed to run their new software. Of course open source alternitives could be quickly made using their source code but what other choice does Microsoft have left?

Microsoft has to give in to Open Source sooner or later.

If Microsoft wants my trust they MUST sign the GPLv3. If they will do that then they have my support. If they can get Richard Stallman’s approval of their openness then I will use Microsoft code in my Linux OS.

Of course there is the matter of Microsoft and privacy. Will Microsoft code keep my data private? I don’t think so.

EU Skeptical of Microsoft’s Open Grizzly Bear Embrace

Maybe all Microsoft really wants is the ability to run Linux software in Windows?

Also apparently Microsoft is now using a Linux based wireless network!

Right now you can go to and read the first GNU Consumer Review blog entries.

This site rates products and services based on real world facts and not on who pays us the most money to review their item. You as the reader also get to comment and rate these companies as well as suggest new companies to review.

We haven’t dugg this page yet or put it on lxer because we are waiting for our registered domains to be linked to this site and for our advertisers to approve our site. Once they do we will open up for everyone. We also want to post several product reviews before announcing the site to the world so if you have any ideas please don’t hesitate to suggest them to us. If you want to write for us you can also let me know at admin @ Thanks.

You will find GNU Consumer Review by using one of these links. (will be available after Edwin gets them working with his Linux web server.)

Now if this was not bad enough the attachment they sent was in Microsoft’s new Office 2007

format that you can’t open in anything else. I believe after reading this that the WA

State Attorney’s Office has been bought off by It’s their job to protect you.

So why would they deny this protection to PayPal customers? “our office
does not have the authority under the law to force a resolution on the
parties.” They don’t have permission to go against PayPal. WOW!

I can’t tell you what is in the Word 2007 file they sent me and I can’t upload it because

I don’t know what is in it. What I can tell you is Office 2003 told me I had to download

a converter from Microsoft and I did. However the converter was unable to open the file

as well. Sad Our US Government has major computer issues.

Ultumix and beyond. What’s new?

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

OK Lets Get Right Too It! ( )

The question that is on everyone’s mind is What will Ultumix have over the buggy and the impressive Well thats a 3 part question because there will be 3 editions in the end.

First of all we will have Ultumix Light. It’s the most stable version and the fastest. Based on Mint XFCE 4.0 it runs very fast, has tons of hardware support, supports dial up a lot better than and, and it has a very nice Windows User friendly interface. It has a few programs on the desktop. Not as many as in the other versions. should be able to fit on the Eee PC. I would recommend replacing the 4 GB memory module with an 8 GB memory module. It just makes more sense. You should also buy an external DVD drive. We also want to add a nice video editor. If it works out we may even put some Linux programs directly onto a CD or DVD so that you can pop the disk in your Eee PC and play the game or open the program installed on it without compiling first.

Ultumix Standard Edition will have all of the nice jaw dropping graphics and programs that Ultumix Light will have but it will have an even more Windows User Friendly user interface because it will be based on KDE with a custom Kmenu. Unlike Ultumix Light it won’t support Dial Up as well and it will require more RAM and processor power but it will be worth it because you will have more programs available and it will be easier to use than it’s XFCE counter part. Don’t get your hopes up because this project will come out long after the XFCE version. We hope to have Cinelerra installed and working right this time. (future versions will be in 64 bit)

Ultumix Ultimate Edition will have everything Standard edition had and be very similar except for one thing. It will have tons of Games and media center applications pre installed to maximize the user’s experience. Ultimate Edition will probably require a 20+ GB root partition but Oh well. All that matters in life is Games, Junk Food, and That Name Tag In Lights You Are Wearing right? I’m sorry if you think so but anyway there is something for everyone. (future versions will be in 64 bit)

In future versions of Ultumix we plan to release our OS compiled for the PS2, PS3, Wii, Nintendo DS, iPhone, XBOX 360, XBOX, and other future Game Consoles. Maybe we could even find a way to hack that mysterious TiVo?

Ultumix is comming soon to a Desktop near you!

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

LOOK OUT! Ultumix is running faster than ever thanks to the new XFCE interface. It’s running so fast with such a small RAM requirement that It does not even slow my PC down when I start it up in a Virtual Machine.

But thats not what makes Ultumix so cool. I found a Start Button on the internet that looked very similar to the XP start button. It looked so similar that I decided it needed some tweaking first. Basically it’s like an ICE version of the XP start menu button if there is such a thing. It’s a cool blue button with START in Big Red Letters across it. No more excuses to not use this OS.

Now there is one thing or make that two things that are driving me crazy. First of all I can’t edit the start menu the way I’d like too because it’s not KDE. The editor only lets me have some abilities. The second thing is that I can’t just right click on the icons in the menu and add them to the desktop.

However in XFCE there are no monitor resolution problems. This is a very good Plus.

In order to add the applications to the desktop I will need to write down the commands used to open each one. It also appears the link to writer is broken in the menu. It opens office but it does not open a document.

There is a lot of work to be done yet to make it more Windows user friendly but I’m getting there. The hardest thing yet may be to edit the GRUB and boot splash.
